New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday rejected plea challenging the Kerala High Court order for CBI probe into the orphanage issue.

After hearing plea filed by Mukkam Muslim Orphanage in Kozhikode and Vettathur Anwarul Orphanage in Malappuram, the court observed the issue was a serious matter.

The apex court issued notice to Centre and the Kerala government and sought their response on a plea seeking stay on the CBI inquiry ordered by the Kerala High Court.

The Kerala High Court had ordered a CBI investigation into the alleged trafficking of children to orphanages in Kerala from West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand by pointing out that a Central agency was required to conduct a proper investigation.

Over 580 children from Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, meant to be brought to two orphanages in the state, were detained by police at a railway station in Kerala after finding that many of them did not have any proper documents.
