Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday said that the promotion of IG Tomin J Thachankary was with the knowledge of Home Minister Rameash Chennithala.

In an interview to Asianet News, the Chief Minister said that the Home Minister had seen the files related to the promotion. “It was given legally, and in accordance with the rules and procedure.”

Thachankary was promoted as Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP), in the State Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, despite the Home department’s opposition against the move.

Responding to reporters’ queries on the matter, Ramesh Chennithala had said he was not aware of it.

Earlier, the State government had turned down the request of police officer Thachankary for promotion as additional director-general of police.

Thachankary's application for promotion was denied on the basis of a report from the chief secretary who took note of an adverse report against the officer from state police chief K S Balasubrahmanian.

Thachankary had been caught up in a controversy over his alleged foreign trip. He was also facing charges of having amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
