Thiruvananthapuram: An online signature campaign has been launched seeking the government's intervention to free Rubeena Buruhanudeen, who has been languishing in a jail in Maldives for more than four years.

The campaign, initiated by journalist Moidu Vanimel, on www.change.org on Friday morning has so far garnered a total of 1000 signatures.

The petition will be submitted to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Indian High Commission in Maldives seeking their intervention in the case.

The online campaign will be closed on January 27.

Rubeena, hailing from Varkala, is facing charges of murdering her 10-month-old child and has been languishing in a jail in Maldives awaiting sentence for more than four years.

The people who support the campaign can sign up on ‘Change.org’ platform: https://www.change.org/p/sushma-swaraj-minister-of-external-affairs-of-india-urgent-intervension-to-free-rubeena-buruhanudeen-held-in-dhoonidhoo-detention-centre-maldives-for-nearly-five-years
