Thiruvananthapuram: K S Sabarinadhan, who won the Aruvikkara bypoll, took oath as a member of the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

There was an emotional moment in the house when he walked up the steps to meet speaker N. Sakthan. The speaker's chair was previously held by Sabarinathan's father G. Karthikeyan, who passed away in March.

31-year-old Sabarinadhan defeated CPI-M candidate and former minister M Vijayakumar by 10,128 votes.

The by-election was announced following Karthikeyan's death. Sabarinadhan’s margin of victory is only 546 short of what his father managed in 2011.

Incidentally, Vijayakumar had defeated Karthikeyan from the Thiruvananthapuram North constituency in 1987.
