Kottayam: A 40-year old man, who suffered serious injuries after police allegedly beat him up while being in custody, died at a hospital here on Saturday.

Marangattupilli Parakkal Siby (40), who was taken into custody on June 29 over a quarrel, had been undergoing treatment in Kottayam medical college.

In protest against the alleged custodial death, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has called for a hartal in Kottayam district on Monday.

Siby was arrested by Marangattupalli police for creating a ruckus after getting drunk. As per sources, he was brutally beaten up the police while being in custody.

The inspector general of Ernakulam range, M.R. Ajith Kumar, had, based on a report, suspended Marangattupalli sub-inspector K.A. George Kutty from service over the incident.

The sub-inspector, however, claimed that Siby had been injured even before he was taken into custody.
