New Delhi: Candidates from Kerala bagged the second and eighth ranks in the prestigious UPSC examination, announced on Saturday.

Dr Renu Raj, a native of Changanassery in Kottayam district, secured the second rank while K Nitish bagged the eighth rank.

Talking to the media, Renu Raj said that the result was quite unexpected. "I am extremely happy to know the result. I have been preparing for the exam for the last one year."

She added that the enormous support from her husband and parents is the factor that helped her crack the exam in her first attempt itself.

Renu is at present working as a medical doctor at ESI Hospital, Kalluvathukkal, near Kollam.

The top four ranks in the examination were secured by women.

A total number of 1,236 candidates have been recommended for appointment to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and Central Services Group 'A' and Group 'B', the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) said.

The other top candidates are - Ira Sehgal (1), Nishi Gupta (3), Vandana Rao (4) and Suharsha Bhagat (5).
