New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday condoled the death of G. Karthikeyan, speaker of the Kerala legislative assembly, saying he made "immense contribution" to the state.

In a condolence message to his wife M.T. Sulekha, the president said: "I am saddened to learn about the passing away of G. Karthikeyan."

"Karthikeyan made immense contribution to Kerala as a senior Congress leader, six-term MLA, minister and speaker of the Kerala legislative assembly. I fondly remember the meticulous care and attention with which he organised my address to the legislative assembly in October 2012 on the occasion of its 125th anniversary," he said.

"In his death, the nation has lost a tall leader whose selfless service to the people of Kerala will be always remembered," he added.
