Kochi: The land acquisition for the Pachalam railway overbridges in the city began on Monday amid strong protests from the local residents.

Officials began the work at around 6 a.m. The land acquisition is being done under the police protection.

Meanwhile, around 10 protesters were arrested by the police for staging protest and disrupting the work on the railway overbridge today.

The protesters have called for a hartal in the area.

Protests against land acquisition had delayed the project. The foundation stone for the ROB was laid on March 4, 2014. As per the schedule of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the implementing agency, work should have been completed by October, 2014.

The plan is to construct an ROB at Pachalam at a cost of Rs 52 crore.

Of the 32 landowners, 13 have already given their consent for the project. The revenue department had earlier served notices, asking remaining 19 people to surrender their holdings within 48 hours.
