Mananthavady: Youth Affairs Minister P K Jayalekshmi entered into wedlock in a traditional ceremony here on Sunday.

Jayalekshmi, 33, who also holds the charge of Welfare of Scheduled Tribes, got married to her childhood friend CA Anil Kumar in a simple ceremony at around 9.30 am.

The marriage, held at the minister’s ancestral home at Valad, near Mananthavady in Waynad district, was attended by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, leader of Opposition V S Achuthanandan, Speaker N Shaktan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Jayalekshimi’s other cabinet colleagues.

Both the bride and the bridegroom belong to the Kurichiya tribe. Their political inclinations are, however, different as Anil Kumar and his family are said to be Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, whereas Jayalekshmi is a Congress leader.

Jayalekshmi, who won the elections on her debut in 2011, is the only woman legislator in the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF).

The hilly district of Wayanad, considered to be one of the most backward districts in the state was in a joyous mood and around 6,000 people attended the minister’s wedding.
