Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader and former Deputy Speaker A Nafeesath Beevi died at a private hospital here on Monday. She was 91.

Her funeral will be held at Palayam mosque cemetery at 3.30 pm on Tuesday.

Born on 22 March 1924 as the daughter of Abdul Karim and Hawa Umma, Nafeesath had a bright academic career with degrees from Women’s College - Thiruvananthapuram, S D College – Alappuzha, and Law College - Ernakulam.

Nafeesath entered politics in 1954 after enrolling as an advocate. She was elected to the second Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1960 from Allappey Constituency and was named the Deputy Speaker the same year. She continued to hold the post till 10 September 1964.

She had been a member of AICC and KPCC. She had also served as a member in the Kerala State Women’s Commission.
