Kottayam: 'Pembillai Orumai', the union of women plantation workers, which spearheaded the historic Munnar tea estate stir, has made their presence when the results of the local body election were announced on Saturday.

Union's leader Gomathi Augustine, a former AITUC activist, won from the Devikulam block panchayat division.

They gained two seats in the Munnar Panchayat. Vellathayi from Kanalar Estate and Mariamma from Cholamalai won in the election to the Munnar panchayat.

Pembiali Orumai, the women collective, had gained nation-wide attention through their agitation for bonus and salary hike in Idukki district.
