Thrissur: Ever since the row over the beef festival erupted, the social media networking sites have been witnessing a flurry of activity. Now, some of the alumni of the Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur have taken to the social media to raise yet another issue related to it: was there a deity under the banyan tree inside the collage?
Many of them say that they used to sit under the banyan tree to spend their leisure time, but had no such deity during those times. They argue that the deity was erected later.
Interestingly, they picked up a scene from a 1987 film, Thoovanathumpikal, which had featured the banyan tree inside the college. The film was directed by P. Padmarajan. The screen shot from the movie shows that there was no deity under the banyan tree.
On Tuesday, an inquiry was ordered against a teacher of the Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, who allegedly put a Facebook post supporting the beef festival.
The festival conducted by the SFI on October 1 created tension in the Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur as students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) tried to stop the function. A clash between the students followed and the police registered cases against 12 SFI activists.
The festival was conducted on the campus in protest against the lynching of a man at Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, accusing him of eating beef.
