Thiruvananthapuram: Defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the site at the Puttingal temple, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Friday said it was a big relief for the people.

“National leaders like PM or Rahul Gandhi or Sitaram Yechury coming did not hamper rescue work, it was big relief for people,” said Chandy.

“We had finished the rescue operations Sunday morning. After 6 a.m, our efforts were to give the victims the medical treatment,” he said.

“The DGP’s comment should not be twisted,” he added.

His comments came amid reports that DGP T.P Senkumar had objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Kollam within hours of the explosion at the Puttingal temple.

“I told them it would be better for the PM to visit the spot a day after the disaster. But the PM wanted to visit that day itself. Our entire force had been working from early morning, engaged in rescue and relief work,” Senkumar said.
