Kozhikode: The body of CPI (Maoist) leader P Ajitha, who was gunned down in an alleged police encounter in the Nilambur forests last month, was buried at a public crematorium at West Hill in Kozhikode on Saturday.

On Friday, the Kerala high court had granted permission for conducting burial services for Ajitha.

The court had also directed that police should afford sufficient opportunity to the petitioner as well as the friends and relatives of Ajitha to pay last respects.

Two Maoists - Kuppuswamy Devaraj, a central committee member of the outlawed outfit, and Ajitha, had been killed in an encounter with police in Nilambur forests on November 24.
