Thiruvananthapuram: Dr. N.A Kareem, academician and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University, passed away at his residence at Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. He was 90.

He had taught at various colleges and universities, including the Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. Later, he joined as the Dean of Students at University of Calicut. He served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala for two terms.

Dr. Kareem joined Ernakulum Maharajas College but was soon expelled due to his active involvement in the then anti-colonial political struggles. After a short term engagement in political and journalistic works, he continued his studies and obtained a BA from Degree College in Malabar, Masters from Aligarh Muslim University, and PhD in English language and literature from University of Kerala.

He was the president of the Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust.
