Kochi: CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Thursday has defended his remarks, saying he did not incite violence in his speech in Payyannur in Kannur.

“I didn’t incite violence. What I had said that we have the right to defend when the RSS attack us,” Kodiyeri told reporters.

The CPI(M) leader has also said he will cooperate if any legal is taken against him in connection with the speech.

Balakrishnan had courted controversy over his reported remarks that party cadres should not remain "mere spectators" to attacks by political rivals.

He made the remarks while referring to the murder of party leader Dhanaraj allegedly by BJP workers on July 11.
