Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP Tuesday hit out at the CPI-M, heading the ruling LDF in the state, for "opposing" the Uniform Civil Code, accusing the party of "following appeasement politics".

"Opposing the Uniform Civil Code and triple talaq is the CPI-Ms double standard and an attempt to strengthen communal polarisation by minority appeasement," BJP state general secretary K Surendran told a press conference here.

Efforts were needed to put an end to male dominance in all the religions and the CPI-M's "propaganda" that the Uniform Civil Code was against the Muslim community amounted to "minority appeasement" and would only help strengthen "communal polarisation", he alleged.

The attitude of denouncing late CPI-M veteran EM Shankaran Namboothripad, who was in favour of the Uniform Civil Code, was part of the partys "vote-bank politics", said Surendran.

"The CPI-M is trying to tighten its bound with the communal outfits ahead of the Assembly polls in some of the states," he alleged.

Taking on the Congress-led UDF, the BJP leader alleged that both the fronts in Kerala were "competing with each other in minority appeasement".

He also criticised the stand of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a partner in the UDF, for objecting to a NIA probe at Peace International School in Kochi, against which a case has been registered for teaching "objectionable" content.

The previous UDF government in the state had taken a "favourable" stand towards the school due to "pressure" from the IUML, he claimed.

"The IUMLs attitude is that teaching fundamentalism is not a crime but investigating it is a crime. This is strange," said Surendran
