Soumya verdict: Govt to go ahead with review petitiontext_fields
Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has decided to go ahead with its plan to file a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict in the Soumya rape and murder case.
The government will soon take decisions on matters related to the further move including appointing new advocates.
Law Minister A K Balan, who is going to Delhi to attend CPI-M’s Central Committee meet, will consult legal experts and the Standing Council.
The LDF government has vowed to leave no stone unturned in its way ahead after the sharp criticism it faced from certain quarters in the case.
Soumya’s mother Sumathy had described the Supreme Court verdict as the 'failure' of the state prosecutor to 'properly' represent the case in the Apex Court. She had said she would not give up her fight to get justice for her daughter, who was the only breadwinner in her family and that she would file a revision petition.
"I will file a revision petition. I will continue to fight until I get justice. I will meet the Chief Minister and tell him my pain", a sobbing Sumathy said.
The Opposition UDF also raised the same allegations.
However, Minister Balan rejected the UDF's charge of 'lapses' on the part of the government and said it had not slipped up in conduct of the case in the Apex Court.
A three judge bench of the Apex Court Thursday commuted the death penalty of Govindachamy, a Tamil Nadu native, to life imprisonment after dropping the murder charge against him.
A Fast Track Court in Thrissur had awarded death sentence to the accused, which was upheld by the Kerala High Court later, against which the accused had moved the Supreme Court.
The prosecution has said the incident took place when Soumya, an employee of a Kochi shopping mall, was travelling in a ladies coach on the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on February 1, 2011 and was attacked and pushed off the slow-moving train by Govindachamy.
It had also said the man jumped off the train, carried the injured woman to a wooded area near the track at Vallathol Nagar and raped her.
She succumbed to injuries at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, on February 6, 2011.
