Thiruvananthapuram: Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau Friday registered a case against senior IPS officer and ADGP Tomin J Thachankary, who was recently removed as the Transport Commissioner, over alleged irregularities during his previous tenure.

"We registered the case after verifying various complaints we received against him and based on a petition filed against the officer at the High Court last month over irregularities when he was the transport commissioner," a Vigilance official told PTI.

The agency had received "concrete evidence" against him in many of the complaints, the official said.

"We received complaints that Thachankary, during his tenure as the Transport Commissioner, had insisted on using a particular company's software at vehicle pollution testing centres," he said.

There are around 500 pollution testing centres in the state for which the license should be issued by the Transport Commissionerate.

"There were also complaints that he had indulged in irregularities in connection with vehicle tax, which is third largest revenue earner for the state exchequer after liquor and sale tax," he said.

Thachankary, who courted controversy by distributing cakes and sweets on his birthday in RTO offices across the state, was sacked by the Chief Minister last month.

The high profile 1984-batch IPS officer has been dogged by controversies, ranging from allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income and making frequent trips abroad without seeking government's permission.
