Muslim League welcomes Babri verdict, says Kalyan Singh, Uma Bharti must resign

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court decision to revive conspiracy charges against senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case, and demanded that Kalyan Singh and Uma Bharti should resign their posts and face trial.

Reacting to the verdict, IUML General Secretary and Lok Sabha member E.T. Mohammed Basheer said the verdict is a huge relief.

"Even though it has come late, it has finally come and it comes very strongly by including a time frame of two years to conclude the case. Moreover it should be noted that the BJP was even planning to field Advani to the post of President. Our demand is that Kalyan Singh, presently a Governor, should not cling on technicalities by speaking of immunity, and resign from that post and face the trial. Likewise, Union Minister Uma Bharti should step down without any more delay," said the former Kerala Education Minister, now a two-time Lok Sabha member.

The other BJP leaders in the case include M.M. Joshi and Vinay Katiyar.

Restoring the conspiracy charge, a Supreme Court bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman also transferred their trial from Rae Bareli to Lucknow.
