Thushar’s Wayand entry lets down BJP workers

Kalpetta: BJP chief Amit Shah’s deputing of Thushar Vellappally to Wayanad constituency has dispirited BJP activists across the district.

Since Rahul’s entry, they had been pitching for a charismatic candidate to take on the national archrival.

Many in BJP, leaders included, view that BJDS candidate wouldn’t be able to garner the votes BJP otherwise could have bagged.

BJP district president Saji Sankar came out in the open for a stronger candidate to fight Rahul.

Some of the names heard at the time include Ruhul’s home-turf rival Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitaraman, and actor Suresh Gopi.

In the last LS polls BJP’s P R Rashminath bagged 80,000 votes.

Allotting of Wayanad to BJDS gave rise to displeasure among district leaders; and Thushar is the third choice in the line-up of candidates for the seat.

The first move was to field former businessman and Kerala congress organising secretary, Anto Augustine.

Following allegations of ‘seat sale’, BJDS leadership announced its state vice president Pyli Vathyat’s candidature and started campaigning.

With Rahul Gandhi’s entry, BJP district leadership pressed the party to take up the seat; however, BJDS refused to part with the seat.
