Kochi: Jew Town in Mattancherry has lost its oldest member with the passing of Sarah J. Cohen around noon on Friday. She was 96 and was about to see another birthday on September 4.

She had suffered a minor fracture in the hip following a fall last week and was under treatment at home.

Sarah, who ran a small embroidery shop on the Jew Town street, has been a beloved part of the Jew community in the city and chose to remain in India even when her close ones migrated to different parts of the world.

The nonagerian's husband Jacob Cohen died 21 years ago. The couple were childless.

The Jewish community of Mattancherry has been reduced to just two members now.

Sarah's relatives including Yaakov Finkelstein, Consul General of Israel in Mumbai, are likely to attend the final rites on Sunday to attend the funeral.
