Kalpetta:  At about 5 pm on Thursday, a phone call from army confirmed the worst fears of people in Kunnathidavaka neigbourhood in Lakkidi, Wayanad.

CRPF soldier V. V. Vasanthakumar turned out to be one of the 45 martyrs in the deadliest yet terrorist attack on Thursday afternoon in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Attached to Battalion 82 of CRPF, V. V. Vasanthakumar spent 18 years in the army, guarding the nation.

Son of late Vasudevan and Santha, Vasanthkumar had returned to barrack on February 9 after 10 days’ vacation following battalion change.

Vasanthakumar was to retire in two years, and is survived by wife Sheena and two children. Nothing could be more painful for the bereaved family.

However, his brother told media he was proud of Vasudevan’s brave martyrdom.

The district administration will today officially inform his family of the demise and details of bringing the mortal remains.
