Malappuram: As UDF bilateral discussions began on Monday regarding seat sharing, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is persisting with its demand for three Lok Sabha seats. Various parties of the front are taking part in the discussions going on at Cantonment House -the official residence of the Opposition leader, in Thiruvananthapuram.

The first discussion is with Muslim League.  Kerala Congress Mani, Jacob factions, CMP and all other parties are taking part.

Muslim League has decided to insist on the demand for more seats. Party state general secretary KPA Majeed had said that the party will raise its demand for a third seat. However, Congress party holds that the constituent parties cannot be given more seats than earlier considering the present situation. The party leaders assume that the parties will be convinced of the situation.

It is observed that Muslim League's demand for a third seat is a part of tactics to gain one more Rajya Sabha seat in a later bargain. The party has deferred the demand for the third seat till the bilateral discussion with an eye on a seat in the upper house of the parliament.

League leaders have emphasised that though it may reiterate its demand, the party will not take a step that would hamper the interests of the UDF alliance. League committees meeting subsequent to the bilateral discussion will take final decisions in this regard.

Meanwhile, Muslim League has decided to ignore a resolution passed by Youth Congress parliament committee against ET Mohammed Basheer. The resolution had demanded fielding PK Kunhalikutty or a new face in the place of ET Mohammed Basheer in  elections. Muslim League leaders hold that such things are routine affairs as elections near.
