Kozhikode: Just as applications for the recently announced Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna flood Krishi Bhavans, BJP is furtively trying to capitalise on the scheme.
The party's Kerala leadership has virtually taken over the government scheme of giving Rs. 6,000 annual financial assistance to farmers.
Activists of the party help people standing in hours-long queues in front of the Krishi Bhavans with drinking water, and filling up their applications.
BJP is trying to turn people making a beeline for the Krishi Bhavans, given the criterion for farm assistance is just owning below five acres of land, into a golden opportunity to prepare the ground for vote.
BJP activists go whole hog as per the direction from the leadership; their ‘services’ would be available as long as the throngs in front of the Krishi Bhavans last.
Alongside, they take to social media to spread the story that the State government is delaying the scheme, while tom-toming PM Modi’s scheme. However, applications from CPM sympathisers are less in number, say farm officers.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar and others already made it clear that the government was not delaying the scheme.
Authorities also dubbed wrong the campaign that deadline for application as February 24. Applications can be submitted any day in Krishi Bhavans. However, in order to avail the first installment for the period from December 2018 to March 2019, applications should be submitted before March 31.
The rush of applications has thrown out of gear the routine works at Krishi Bhavans, officials say.
