Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that CPM had always demanded reservation for financially backward classes in the upper castes. "Now that finally they have taken this decision, it is a welcome step," Pinarayi said.

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the party will support in principle central government’s move to bring 10% reservation to economically backward sections in forward communities. However, existing reservation system should not be changed,  and the central government's move is in view of the Lok Sabha elections, Kodiyeri said.
