Thiruvananthapuram: Police commissioners of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will soon have magisterial powers, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly.

The decision will make them enjoy the powers alongside district collectors.

Meanwhile, UDF criticised the government’s plan to form police commissionerates. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said that although UDF government accepted the proposal of the commissionerates, but didn’t implement over apprehensions of providing magisterial power to police.

Chief Minister rebuffed this saying that there was no need for apprehensions since 50 cities in the country successfully implemented it.
