Kannur: CPM and the government are saving themselves in the case of suicide of Sajan Parayil, an NRI businessman who failed to obtain clearance to open his conference centre. The government has suspended four officials of the municipality.

However, no actions are mulled against Anthur Municipal Chairperson. The bereaved family had complained that it was the municipality chairperson PK Syamala who denied a completion certificate for the convention centre built at an expense of Rs 15 crores.

Sajan's wife Beena had quotedSyamala as saying that the certificate would not be issued as long as she was in office.  The party leadership is not considering the complaints of Sajan's family who are also sympathisers of the party. CPM explains that Syamala has not said so;  the party has apparently decided to protect her.

PK Syamala is wife of MV Govindan who is a prominent figure in the party in Kannur and Central Council member of the party. CPM is trying to cool down the rage of Sajan's family by taking action against the officials.

The family is stern on the complaint against the chairperson even after action against the officials. CPM's top-ranking leaders, MV Jayarajan, P. Jayarajan and PK Sreemati, who arrived  at Sajan's home on Thursday, have demanded action against Syamala. However, other leaders have not responded to the demand.

Anthur municipality is ruled by CPM without any opposition. There, officials will not dare to deny permit for a large-scale project without an instruction from governing council or chairperson. The officials are now trapped as they presumably complied with such a verbal instruction.

Internal conflict within the CPM ranks is evident in the words of CPM leaders who are blaming the officials after the incident became a controversy.  P. Jayarajan says that he had intervened in the matter and had visited the convention centre as a move to solve the complaint.

MV Jayarajan also says that the matter was discussed at the chief minister's office. It is incredible that the Municipality secretary, the engineer and overseers denied the certificate in such a case where no instance of seriousnon-compliance of rules was cited.

Suspension of the officers was declared in order to diffuse the crisis at the earliest as the matter is also related to division among the party leaders.
