Kerala jails to have more mobile jammers

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that many inappropriate activities are going on in jails and action will be taken against responsible officials. He was replying to a submission by KC Joseph in the Legislative Assembly.

Scorpio segment of Indian Reserve Battalion will be deployed for jail security and more mobile signal jammers will be fixed to curb use of mobile phones inside jails,  the chief minister said.

Drugs and other materials are carried into the jail compound during return of the habitual criminals after court appearence.

15 policemen of KAP were deployed to examine this.  The KAP personnel are now replaced with Scorpio segment of Indian Reserve Battalion. Video conferencing system which links jails with courts will be implemented within three months.

Actions including raid were conducted after the government took congnisance of unwarranted activities in jails. Mobile phones, drugs and other materials were seized during the surprise raid conducted last week.

Action will be taken against responsible officials,  and also against prisoners who behaved illegally after registering criminal case against them.  the Chief Minister said in the assembly.
