Kerala to ask for more security forcestext_fields
Kochi: Kerala is likely to ask for more security forces from Centre to take on presence and threat of Left extremists in Kozhikode, Palakkad, Wayanad, Malappuram and Kannur districts.
Against 55 companies of the security forces deployed during the 2014 polls, the State this time will require 149 companies, according to Chief Electoral Officer Teeka Ram Meena.
Talking to media on Wednesday, he said 905 sensitive booths have been identified as per initial assessment, and the numbers may go up.
Average voter turnout earlier stood at the 70-80% range. This time, the attempt is to make it to 90%, Mr. Meena said.
He put to rest the fears of possible tampering with electronic voting machines, saying that they were manufactured by two major public sector companies.
As well as being manufactured in high security environment, their movement from the factories to various centres is closely monitored, he said.
