Bail denied to youths with alleged Maoist links
text_fieldsKozhikode: Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court today denied bail to Alan Shuhaib and Thaha Fazal, the two students arrested under the provisions of UAPA for Maoist links. The court rejected their bail pleas accepting the strong evidence submitted by the police.
The court however allowed the lawyers to meet the two accused. A plea made by Hindu Aikya Vedi opposing the bail was not considered by the court. The two students were arrested last Saturday in Kozhikode for allegedly being Maoist sympathisers.
The booking of the two youths under provisions of UAPA has been the subject of fierce controversy in the political sphere, with the Opposition, and even sections of the ruling LDF blaming police for the overzealous act.
The court however did not hear any arguments today over the withdrawal of slapping of UAPA. But the prosecution had not objected to the bail of the accused when the matter was heard on Monday. Nor did the police file any plea seeking their custody.
The counsel for the accused said that they will approach the High Court for bail and will also seek to cancel the FIR registered.
