Kochi: Acting in compliance with the Supreme Court order, the government will start evicting residents of Maradu flats from today.  The resident however sought more time to prepare to leave their flats.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, Chief Secretary Tom Jose said that the government would move ahead with the action plan submitted to the apex court.

Also, the government would pay flat owners the interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh in a ‘time-bound manner’.

Meanwhile, the residents in a letter submitted to the government sought more time to leave the flats, while requesting to expedite the payment of compensation.

They would start a hunger strike in the event of them being forced out, and sought to complete data collection before eviction.

The demolition of apartments will begin on October 11 and finish by January 9, 2020.

The government has taken steps to confiscate the properties of builders and directed banks to freeze their bank accounts.
