text_fieldsbookmark_border
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Election Commission on Thursday approached the Supreme Court against the Kerala High Court division bench's decision to conduct the coming local bodies’ elections on the basis of the 2019 voters list.
The Commission appealed the Supreme Court to cancel the HC order and allow it to conduct polls based on 2015 list.
Election commission is an independent institution and it cannot accept the court’s intervention in matters including preparing the voters list, the commission argued.
The commission has decided to use the voters list prepared in 2015, and the high court’s order to cancel it would affect the election, causing delay, it said.
It is not feasible to revamp the list in a short time. Also it will incur an excess cost of Rs 10 core.
