Kochi: As the skyscraper Coral Cove, one of the illegal flats, sagged down to a billowing cauliflower of dust and rubble, owners watched it with racing emotions.

One of the flat owners, Linulal comforted his wife who sobbed out heart-wrenching words, “how long had we lived there...”

The family watched the demolition of the flats from the window of a luxury hotel nearby.  Flat number 6 H was their dream nest, a realization of their dreams.

Linulal took his wife who collapsed at the sight to the rented home where they are now living.

Later he turned up to see the pile of rubble where the flat had been. “We bought the flat because our son Rhishi is studying in a school nearby. Sitting on the balcony we could see the school. That was the reason why we bought the flat. We haven’t yet informed the son of the demolition of the flat”, he said.

Linulal, hailing from Kottayam, is a drummer at TV channels. The family bought flat in 2011 at 55 lakhs and stared living there from 2013.

“We are not rich. We bought the flat pooling in money from selling properties. Most people here are so. A lot of people out there are celebrating the demolition of the flats. After leaving the flats, many people live in single rooms in warehouses, and hostels. Life has changed for the people who previously lived a nice life”. He said

A lot of people do not care about the fact that the flat owners are suffering for no reason. As compensation, the family got 25 lakhs. We pray to God to spare others what we suffered”, he said.
