Thrissur: Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady is to discontinue its Thrissur Centre.  In the notification released for inviting applications for post-graduation courses in new academic year, Thrissur Centre is not included. As the university is reeling due to huge expenses, the authorities are mulling closure of the centre if a building is not rented at low price or gratis basis.

Other than its main centre in Kalady, the university has centres in Payyannur, Koyilandy, Tirur, Thrissur, Ettumanur, Thuravur, Panmana and Thiruvananthapuram. Of theses centres,  only the ones at Thrissur and Thuravoor are functioning in rented buildings. In the Thrissur Centre functioning at West Fort, MA Sanskrit Literature, Malayalam and Hindi programmes are offered. An MA programme in Sanskrit Nyaya was annulled two years ago citing a dismal number of admissions. However, it is alleged that the closure was to decrease the number of guest lecturers and other staff.

At present there are 12 faculty members for three programmes. Of these, six are guest faculties.  It includes teachers who have an experience of over two decades. If the centre is scapped, these teachers will be in a crisis.

Students, who complete their graduation studies from colleges in Thrissur, rely on the Thrissur centre of Sanskrit University to pursue post graduate programmes in language studies. Most of the students are girls many of whom  study with the aid of Single Girl Child scholarship.

When MA Sanskrit Nyaya programme was stopped, four faculties lost their jobs.

The senior batch of students in ongoing programmes will complete their course in April. The faculties can continue another year till the students admitted to the programmes in the present academic year complete their course.

The permanent faculties of the centre will be deployed to other centres. The Campus Director will retire by next academic year.
