Kochi:  Employee unions including one by government nurses challenged at High Court the government’s ordinance for salary cut.

Unions to come out include Kerala Government Nurses Union, Kerala NGO Association, Kerala Gazetted Officers Union, Kerala NGO Sangh, Kerala Secretariat Association, PSC Employees Association, Higher Secondary School Teachers Association, Aided Higher Secondary Teachers Association, among others.

Petitioners challenged Kerala Disaster and Public Health Emergency (Special Provisions) Ordinance 2020, approved by the cabinet on April 29th.

The ordinance was issued on April 30 after HC stayed on April 28 its move to defer payment of six days salary.

The unions allege the ordinance is aimed at circumventing HC orders, thus the government can defer pay of employees in part or in full.

An ordinance will not help the government defer salary as it requires amending of Kerala service rules, Unions argue.
