Kochi: An incident of an alleged attempt of public masturbation on a moving in Kochi and the outright reaction of a girl who video recorded the incident made the accused Savad Sha behind bars, creating a heated debate on social media where people expressed their diverse views.

The incident once again triggered a debate nearly three weeks after the accused was released from jail, as the All Kerala Men's Association organized a grand reception for him, welcoming him with garlands.

There have been several reports that have emerged questioning the girl, Nandita, who accused Savad Sha of masturbating while sitting nearby her on a moving bus. These reports included allegations that she had created false complaints of such a sort to increase her social media followers and that her scanty and revealing dress was to be called out.

Nandita's ordeal began nearly three weeks ago when she bravely confronted Savad Sha, whom she had purportedly caught masturbating beside her on a bus in Kochi. Despite facing severe cyber-attacks, a common occurrence for survivors of sexual offences, Nandita remained resilient and determined to bring attention to the issue.

However, the gesture by the men's association, which involved garlanding Savad upon his release from Aluva sub-jail, has remarkably reversed public sentiments towards Nandita. She explains that the Association's support for a man accused of sexual misconduct has garnered widespread condemnation, leading people to rally behind her once again.

"The men's association's move was so disgusting that I began to receive the kind of support that came in the initial days after the incident," Nandita has told The News Minute. The public outcry against the Association's endorsement of a sexual offender has highlighted the stark contrast in their priorities.

Nandita points out, "These are the people who consistently support sexual offenders. If a rapist comes out on bail, they would put a garland on him, but if they hear about a man who took part in the freedom fight, they wouldn't care."

Online harassment, bullying, and the unjust scrutiny of her womanhood ensued, with unfounded rumours circulating about her personal life and intentions. False stories of pregnancies and subsequent abortions were fabricated without any factual basis, while baseless theories suggested her involvement in an elaborate honey trap.

As the public discourse surrounding this incident continues, it remains to be seen how the All Kerala Men's Association will respond to the widespread criticism of their support for an accused sexual offender.
