Kochi: The Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary in Kerala, Kanam Rajendran, passed away on Friday out of cardiac arrest. He was 73.

There were earlier reports that Rajendran gave a three-month leave application and was relieved from party responsibilities. He cited health issues in his application to the party central committee to grant him leave.

Complications of diabetes ended up in amputating his leg. The infection had spread over his leg, as reported. Mathrubhumi reports that he was subjected to surgery at the Amrita Hospital in Kochi.
