Kochi: With Kerala's Covid-19 case load registering an unusual rise, the state's health department is reportedly switching to a admission strategy for patients. By this, treatment at home will be made the norm for those who test positive but do not have any symptoms.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had indicated the other day that the months of October and November will be critical and the number of patients wil rise further. The change in strategy is in view of the possibility when the number of beds and ventilators and allied facilities will be inadequate to treat all patients at hospitals.

Figures show that out of all positive cases, 40 percent do not show any symptoms. At present, such people can be treated at hospital or at home. However, hencoforth if they do not suffer from other serious health conditions, they will be excluded from hospital care and compulsory treatment will be provided at home.

For asymptomatic positive cases who do not have suitable amenities at home, steps have been initiated to arrange a system of domiciliary treatment centre in select centres with treatment facilities. These centres will not have the constant presence of stationed doctors, but service of health workers including nurses will be available.

As per reports from Thiruvananthapuram, out of 95,351 Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment, 60 percent are getting it at home. Treatment at home leads the percentage in recovery rate too. The case of a 96-year old woman attaining cure, has been cited as an extraordinary case of recovery in health care.

Although treatment at home was started in Thiruvananthapuram district, most patients currently are in Ernakulam: 9,041 patients. There are seven districts with more than 5,000 patients being treated at home.
