IUML slows down on protests against PSC taking over Wakf Board recruitment

Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League, and a section of Muslim organisations, mainly the Samastha bodies, have been reportedly showing second thoughts on holding protests at mosques against the CPI (M)-led Kerala government's alleged anti-Muslim stand. The soft-pedalling on the earlier decision follows the difference of opinion within the community for using mosques as a venue of protest and concerns about trouble-makers causing any law and order situation in the mosque premises.

The IUML, an ally of the Congress party in the state, had been at the forefront of protests against the state government's decision to entrust all recruitments for the Kerala Wakf Board with the Public Service Commission.

A Musliom co-ordination committee meeting, convened recently as part of consolidating community opinion against the state government's decision, under the aegis of IUML and with the active participation of most of the mainstream religious bodies of the community, had decided to hold awareness sessions at mosques on Friday against the government's decision. The move was intended to make the community aware of the implications of the government's decision and mobilise opinion on that basis.

However, with the involvement of IUML in the decision, the CPI-M and more vocally chief minister Pinarayi, have been targeting IUML with the allegation that the party is politicising the issue. The Chief Minister even obliquely warned that CPI-M leaning members of the community will raise objections to it in the mosques.

Taking a cue from this, and to avert possible maligning of the atmosphere in mosques, Samastha chief, Syed Muhammad Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, distanced his organisation from making mosques a venue for any protest. He explained that mosques are better spared the possible disturbance and their sanctity protected.

Thangal however took exception to the tone of defiance used by Wakf Minister V Abdurahman, said that the chief minister had called him, and the issues would be discussed with the government. Any decision about protests could be taken based on that basis for further steps.

The Malappuram district president of IUML Malappuram district President Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal also agreed with the view of Samastha and in a statement he said that the party was withholding protests at mosques.

Thangal also said that the decision to raise the Waqf Board issue at mosques has been withdrawn in the wake of an attempt by some people to politicise the issue. He said that the issue will be dealt with through other methods outside the mosques.

Both IUML and Samastha wings are of the opinion that no room should be allowed for dissenting sections to foment trouble under any pretext. They have also decided to discuss the issue further and take a stand for any action before next Friday 10 Dec. As a matter of fact, the co-ordination committee had not decided to make any protests at the mosques, but only to conduct awareness talks at the Friday prayer gatherings.

Other organizations who have a network of mosques under their control, including Kerala Nadwatul Mujahideen (KNM) Markazudawa, Wisdom Global Islamic Mission and Jamaat-e-Islami are reported to go ahead with creating awareness about the government moves about Wakf Board appointments.
