Mysterious underground sounds puzzle residents of Kottayam hamlet in Kerala

Kottayam: Concern has been raised among residents of a small hamlet in the Kottayam district of Kerala due to the emergence of perplexing underground sounds. The deafening noises were heard on two occasions in the early hours of Friday, according to locals in the village of Chenappady. Reports indicate that similar sounds were also observed in the area and neighbouring places earlier in the week.

Despite the alarming nature of these occurrences, there have been no visible changes in the surrounding environment. The villagers believe that only a comprehensive scientific study can determine the exact cause behind these persisting underground sounds.

Responding to the situation, officials from the Kerala Department of Mining and Geology have announced that their team of experts will soon visit the area for inspection. A department source revealed that preliminary investigations had already taken place when the sounds were initially reported earlier this week. However, considering the recurrence of the massive sounds, the experts will conduct a follow-up examination.

Nonetheless, the source emphasized that a comprehensive scientific study conducted by the Centre for Earth Sciences (CES) is essential to ascertain the true cause of these recurring seismic sounds. Acknowledging their limitations in analysing such phenomena, the department has formally requested the CES to conduct an examination and study in the area.

The geology department experts, while planning to revisit the site and analyse the details further, maintain that the CES investigation will provide crucial insights into this mysterious occurrence.

Residents of the hamlet eagerly await the results of the upcoming inspections and studies, hoping to finally unravel the enigma behind these underground sounds that have gripped their tranquil village.
