Southwest Monsoon to arrive 3 days early in Kerala

New Delhi: Southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala on Sunday, three days ahead of its normal date of June 1, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The arrival of monsoon was predicted for May 27, with an error of plus or minus four days, but later, there was a debate over the onset by the IMD. Finally the new date was fixed for Sunday as the conditions were 'favourable' for the arrival of monsoon.

"Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, the May 29 against the normal date of onset, June 1. Thus the Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala three days ahead of its normal date," IMD said in a tweet.

"Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some parts of central Arabian Sea, reaming parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Karnataka, and some more parts of south and Central Bay of Bengal, some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal and northeastern states during next 3-4 days," it added.

The news of onset of SW monsoon - termed as the real finance minister of India - over Kerala, is the most awaited news for the agrarian domain across the country as it has a major impact on the domestic economy, including the share markets.

On Thursday, contrary to its earlier prediction of onset of SW monsoon over Kerala on May 27, the IMD had said that it can happen "anytime in this forecasting week (meaning till June 1) and the conditions are being monitored real time." Prior to it, on May 19, the IMD had said that the onset of SW monsoon over Kerala was possible by May 25.
