App notifications have negative impacts on minds, Come with constant distraction and stress
text_fieldsNotifications that pop up on your phone frequently are detrimental to mental health. A new study has found that notification bars are a source of entertainment as well as irritation because they can be informative as well as annoying due to unnecessary alerts.
A UK-based study has found these notifications have a negative influence on attention spans and cause stress on the brain. Findings suggest that the generally short notifications prompt task-irrelevant thoughts or mind wandering. It can disrupt performance on attention-demanding tasks.
An average person is likely to experience wandering attention from what they are doing every 15 minutes. If they are interrupted by a phone, it will take them several minutes to fully regain concentration, reported Science Alert. New data also found that people try to compensate for interruptions by working faster which leads to more stress, higher frustration, time pressure, and effort.
An average user checks their phone 85 times per day which means you pick up your phone once every 15 minutes. And smartphones are used by two billion people across the world. This means that notifications on phones can alter the behaviour of a large group of people.
Previous studies have found that smartphones affect sleep, interpersonal relationships, driving safety, and personality.
