Best burger' in New Zealand for 2023 draws inspiration from Goan street food
text_fieldsWellington: A Goan-inspired burger has been crowned as the best in New Zealand's annual competition.
The annual 'Burger Wellington' contest is held in Wellington, New Zealand's capital, with the aim of promoting the city's culinary scene and, consequently, tourism.
According to the event's official website, the festival invites chefs from the region to create the ultimate burger, exploring the quirky and delightful possibilities that can fit between two buns. This year, the festival took place from August 11 to 27, during which a panel of approximately 11,500 burger aficionados sampled the best burgers. The theme for this year was 'Breaking The Mould,' encouraging participants to craft something distinctive and original.
The burger that claimed the crown was none other than the Goan Ros Pao Burger, created by Executive Chef Chetan Pangam of One80 Restaurant. Chef Chetan Pangam paid homage to his hometown, Goa, by fashioning a burger inspired by the beloved street food, Ros Omelette.
According to the festival's official website, "The burger features a richly spiced chicken curry, a 'Ros' omelette, and a unique bun that represents the 'Poee' style bread that the omelette and curry is typically served in."
Sarah Meikle, the festival director, explained that the festival's purpose was to encourage people to dine out and support the hospitality sector. The flavour journey offered by the Goan Ros Pao burger was unparalleled.
Meikle expressed her delight, saying, "It was fantastic to see Wellingtonians eating out and about, supporting our local venues. The One80 Restaurant burger was a real flavour journey that brought together the fragrant herbs and spices of India; it's an absolute pleasure to see Chef Chetan and the team take the title this year."
Burgers have evolved from mere fast food to gourmet delights crafted with premium ingredients, captivating food enthusiasts worldwide.
