Antecedent statin therapy used could lower Covid-19 mortality rate and severity of the infection, said Sr. Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. H.K. Chopra. The covid virus is proinflammatory, prothrombotic, and proimmunogenic. The therapy can counter these effects.

It works because it is anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic. It could improve the endothelial function in covid inflicted endothelititis and reduce CRP levels in blood plasma, reported The Hindu.

CRP (C-reactive protein) is an annular pentameric protein found in blood plasma, whose circulating concentrations rise in response to inflammation.

Underlying issues like hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, heart failure, and CKD are responsible for more Covid deaths than the actual infection itself. On World Heart Day, the cardiologist said that people should focus on cholesterol fitness which can enhance the chances of a healthy heart.

The prevalence of Coronary Artery Disease in adults in India is rising steeply despite sophistication in technology, he added.
