Embassy of India, Muscat concludes ‘Mandvi to Muscat’ lecture series

Muscat: The Embassy of India in Muscat successfully concluded the prestigious eight-month lecture series titled ‘Mandvi to Muscat: Indian Community and the Shared History of India and Oman.’ The final session, held on May 1, 2024, featured an enlightening presentation by Prof Dr. Calvin Allen from the US, renowned for his expertise in the subject matter.
Dr. Allen provided an extensive overview of the profound history of the Indian diaspora in Oman, traversing from ancient times to the contemporary era. He delved into various aspects, including ancient trade routes, cultural exchanges and socio-economic interactions, contributing to the enduring bond between India and Oman.
The event also featured enlightening presentations by notable figures such as Mr. Harshendu Shah, Mr. Kiran Asher, Dr. P. Mohammad Ali and Mr. Dharmin Ved. These speakers shared valuable insights into the evolution of Indian schools, the significance of Hindu temples in Oman and personal anecdotes highlighting the enduring people-to-people connections.
Over 300 attendees, including dignitaries, scholars and prominent members from Omani, Indian and Indian-Omani communities, graced the event at the Mahajan Recreation Centre in Al Wadi Al Kabir. Notable figures in attendance included H.E Dr. BR Mani, H.E Jamal al-Moosawi, H.E Sayyid Nooh bin Mohammed Al Busaidi and H.E. Pankaj Khimji, among others.
In his address, H.E Amit Narang, Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, emphasized the significance of the ‘Mandvi to Muscat’ series in revitalizing awareness about the contributions of the Indian community in strengthening India-Oman ties. He announced that all papers presented during the series would be compiled and published into a book.
The ‘Mandvi to Muscat’ lecture series, inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs of India Shri V Muraleedharan, culminated in an enriching eight-month journey. The series facilitated deep insights into the historical connections between India and Oman, with participation from distinguished academics, historians and anthropologists.
This unique initiative has significantly contributed to fostering a better understanding of the Indian community's history in Oman and its pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations between India and the Sultanate of Oman.
