Dubai: For the Indian diaspora in the UAE, securing an Aadhaar card - India's ubiquitous identity document - is now a streamlined process. While non-resident Indians (NRIs) don't need to hold an Aadhaar card, it becomes essential for those planning to return to India or stay for an extended period. This 12-digit unique identification number, interlinked with biometric data, is crucial for various transactions and official procedures in India.

Aadhaar stands as a crucial identity, age and address proof in India that is linked to individual biometric details, ensuring a high level of security and uniqueness. NRIs might find Aadhaar indispensable for banking, property rentals and navigating government services efficiently.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers the 'Aadhaar on Arrival' program, simplifying the process for NRIs. Although you can initiate the application from abroad, physical presence in India is mandatory for biometric verification.

Navigating the Aadhaar Forms

UIDAI has tailored different application forms catering to various age groups and residency statuses:

Form 1: For applicants aged 18 and above.

Form 2: For NRIs with addresses outside India.

Form 3: For minors aged 5-18, with proof of an Indian address.

Form 4: For NRI children without an Indian address proof.

The Application Process:

1. Booking an Appointment: Schedule your visit either through UIDAI's official website or by visiting an Aadhaar centre in India. Online booking allows you to select a convenient time slot and location.

2. Document Submission: Upon your appointment, present the necessary documents at the enrolment centre. These include your Indian passport (as proof of identity and address) and potentially other documents substantiating your NRI status.

3. Biometric Data Recording: The enrolment process involves capturing your fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs – essential components of your Aadhaar profile.

After completing these steps, your Aadhaar card will be processed and mailed to your registered address in India, typically within 90 days.

Essential Documents for NRI Applicants

The primary document required is a valid Indian passport. In its absence, you may provide alternative UIDAI-approved documents. Additionally, a birth certificate is necessary for individuals born post-October 1, 2023. NRI children must present a valid Indian passport as their primary document.
