Dubai RTA announces three-year plan to transform public transport infrastructure

Dubai: Dubai is set to witness significant improvements in its public transportation infrastructure as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) embarks on a three-year plan to develop 16 bus stations and six bus depots across the city. This initiative aims to elevate the quality of public transport services and encourage more residents to choose public transportation for their daily commutes.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the construction of these bus stations and depots is integral to the RTA's strategy to enhance public transport infrastructure.

He said’ “The project goes beyond the traditional function of stations, aiming to not just facilitate passenger mobility but to enhance the overall travel experience. This encompasses offering comprehensive services that contribute to passenger happiness, improving accessibility for people of determination, providing bicycle racks, and ensuring seamless connectivity with Dubai Metro and taxi services”.

The project will focus on enhancing 16 bus stations designated for public bus passengers, strategically located across Dubai. These include nine stations in Deira and seven in Bur Dubai. Notable locations include the Mall of the Emirates, Jebel Ali, Ibn Battuta and Hatta. The renovation of bus passenger terminals and the addition of prayer rooms at select stations are among the planned improvements.

In addition to the bus stations, the project will also involve the development of six bus depots in key areas such as Al Khawaneej, Al Qusais and Jebel Ali. These depots will undergo various upgrades, including the revamping of inspection lanes, installation of new system infrastructure and rehabilitation of public facilities. Residential quarters for drivers will be provided at Jebel Ali and Al Quoz Depots.

The RTA has already completed the construction of several public bus stations in 2021, emphasizing integration with other modes of transport and ensuring accessibility for all residents. These stations, located across Dubai, prioritize safety and smooth access for pedestrians and cyclists. Elements such as public bus parking, cycling lanes and pedestrian crossings have been incorporated to encourage the use of individual mobility options.
