Dubai: The UAE's Moon-sighting committee has urged Muslims in the country to look for the crescent moon on Monday evening, which marks the 29th day of Ramadan. The sighting of the crescent moon will determine the start of Eid Al Fitr, the festival marking the end of the month-long fast.
The Moon-sighting committee, comprising astronomers, court officials and advisers from the Emirates' Islamic authority, plays a vital role in confirming the start of Eid Al Fitr. They will be looking for the new crescent moon, which signals the beginning of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has already confirmed the Eid Al Fitr holiday for both the public and private sectors. Employees across the country will enjoy working days off, starting from April 8.
Eid Al Fitr is a joyous occasion celebrated with morning prayers, family gatherings, gift-giving and charitable donations. It is a time for Muslims to come together in celebration after a month of fasting.
