Jammu: The Pakistan Rangers Wednesday violated the ceasefire on the international border in Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Diwali visit to the state.

"Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing at BSF (border security force) positions in Ramgarh area of the Samba district today (Wednesday)," a police officer told IANS here.

He said Pakistan firing with automatics and small arms started at 9.40 a.m. Wednesday, and the BSF effectively retaliated.

"Firing in Ramgarh area has now stopped, but they have also violated the ceasefire in Arnia sub-sector of R.S. Pura in Jammu district at 10.10 a.m., where firing exchanges are still on," the officer added.

The ceasefire violations come on the eve of Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir Thursday when the Prime Minister will celebrate Diwali with the state's flood-affected victims.
